Portugal's symbols
This is the Portuguese flag which was introduced and adopted on June 30, 1911. The Portuguese flag's means something very important to the people in this country. The green represents the future and hope of Portugal and it's people. The red represents the blood that Portugal was in, in the revolution of 1910. The white shield consist of 5 blue shields which represent the first king of Portugal Afonso Henriques and his conquering on 5 Moorish kings and the five white dots on the shields represents the divine assistance he received to take over the 5 Moorish kings, which symbolizes the five wounds of Jesus Christ. The shields are formed into a cross to represent Christianity. The red border featuring seven castles symbolizes the extension of Portugal's territory to include the Algrave. Behind the arms there is a Navigation Instrument, an armillary sphere, this represents Prince Henry the Navigator who initiated the maritime explortation that led to Portugal's one time colonial emprie.
The Baxia, is Portugal's downtown area is a very famous landmark for its' beautiful design and its' shops.
